Small Local Business Ain't Got A Chance

EXCUSE THE ENGLISH BUT WITH LARGE MERCHANTS CLOSING LOCATIONS IN DROVES AND SOME ARE NOT EVEN DOING WELL ONLINE….HOW CAN THE SMALLER MERCHANTS HOPE TO SURVIVE?

 

The main advantage local merchants have in their arsenal is that they are local. Their personalization and service is a big plus but the bombardment noise of promotions, advertising and marketing of the big boys makes it hard for the local guys/gals to be heard.

 

The good news is that the marketing tools that can help them are readily available. The bad news is that these services are spread all over the map and cost more than they can afford. Additionally they don’t have the expertise or time to implement a do it yourself coordinated program. The small business is tied up with helping customers, taking deliveries, wiping down the counters and a myriad of everyday tasks that take up all their time.

 

I walked into a local frozen yogurt shop I have been visiting frequently and did a mini-survey. I asked him if he knew me. He said, “of course, you have been coming in for over 10 years”. He said he knew a great many of customers as well as he knew me. Then came the real questions. I asked him if he knew my last name; my email address: my cell phone number and how did could contact me when I wasn’t in his store – to bring me back more often. His answer was, “no, I don’t know any of the answers but believe my yogurt is so good that you will want to keep coming back – I hope”.

 

He was typical of many of the local merchants and services in the neighborhood. Some grasped marketing technology (at least to some degree) but most had only a limited knowledge and but didn’t have the money, time or knowledge to put a coordinated campaign together like their larger competitors.

 

For the most part, my neighborhood survey (which we greatly expanded across the country) indicated that most small merchants would like to have a real loyalty program, email/text and push messaging, private branded coupon site, social media, cross-marketing program and a mobile app. In other words, the modern marketing tools that create business and a continuity program plus analytics that points to, and keep them on, a path to obtain repeat and new business – and increased profitability.

 

Many of the tools were available on a piecemeal, and pricey basis, but there was no one stop shop that supplied it all – at a price they could afford. And although affordability was of major importance to them, the number one factor in the equation was the necessity of having someone do all the work for them.  Sure they could find a good email or text provider but they would have to do most or all of the creative and heavy lifting themselves. This stands true for all the other marketing tools they need as well.

 

That’s what got us into the business. Sure we wanted to make money, but providing small business the services they needed at a very affordable price was very important to us.   So we built a better mousetrap - but if we couldn’t find a methodology that would create traction in the market it would all be for naught.

 

Many companies have tried to capture local markets. Knocking doors is too expensive for most companies to try – especially on a national level. So we took a different approach. We decided that the road to mass distribution was through suppliers and organizations that already had relationships with local merchants and services. Companies that were looking for a value added service that would be appreciated by their customers while offering them the opportunity for a substantial passive revenue stream.

 

We have been building private branded cash back loyalty malls for some time and decided to expand into the hyper-local game, and our beta test proved us correct.

 

We have signed agreements with marketing partners that have over 500,000 existing small business and local merchant customers. When Should National be Local?

The answer is always.  National chains should think and act local.

 

Local merchants are always competing with big brother but the opposite is also true.  Neighborhood merchants have some distinct advantages within their local communities and nationals are finding themselves having to adopt these tools and marketing strategies to meet the challenges of aggressive local competitors.

 

National advertising and promotions are great but a touch of direct communication to neighborhood consumers can make a big difference in sales. If given the incentive consumers would like to support local businesses, so it makes good sense to promote themselves as one.

 

Accordingly, they might benefit by initiating a “direct to their customers outreach program” that grabs local consumers and pulls them into their establishments. Add local cause marketing to the mix (schools, non-profits, hospitals, events) and you have a sure fire platform to attract the shoppers and see your sales figures attain a weekly lift.

 

Coupons are great but a combination of coupons, text messaging, emails and push messaging specifically targeted to bring back existing customers more often is a prime goal. Surveys have proven that Businesses can boost profits 25%-50% by bringing back 5% of their present customers back more often.

 

Here is an example of one of our tests.

 

I have been going to a local frozen yogurt and ice cream store for years. He has seen two national chains, right across the street, go out of business within a year. They had the power of national names and national advertising but he had an affordable local marketing program that generated traffic, sales and an affinity with the community.

 

I took a coupon into one of the national yogurt merchants (before he closed his doors), handed him the coupon, got the deal and walked out with my cup of triple chocolate yogurt. He had handed me a punch card but never asked for my name, email address, cell phone number or any information at all.

 

On the other side of the street, the independent yogurt shop handed a customer his punch card and then asked for, and received, all the information he needed to subsequently reach out and communicate directly with that customer.  First of all, he simply asked that person to join his loyalty program and quickly gave him the reason and incentives to do so. He used the same type of punch card approach but got a completely different result, & now he  has the ability to reach out to that customer, offer him targeted products and promotions to bring him back more often.

 

 The merchant was wearing one of our “Ask Me About Screcials” buttons. The customer asked what is a Screcial and the merchant said it is a super special for loyalty members only. It is a daily special that you can scratch off on your computer, tablet or phone (Like a lottery Ticket). Then he mentioned all the other benefits of his program such as cash back and special discounts at over 1200 national merchants and hundreds of thousands of neighborhood merchants that are participating is his program. The consumer was very impressed.

 

His loyalty and rewards platform also included a branded coupon web site, mobile app, email, text, push messaging, analytics and other direct to consumer marketing tools that are designed to bring his customers back more often and attract new ones. As we all found out, the market is migrating to mobile, so a mobile app, texting and social marketing are paramount to success. For instance, 95%-98% of Text messages are read within minutes – and generating quick action.

 

Needless to say, I was very pleased because this was one of the member retailers that was enrolled in our Local Thanks loyalty program and it worked precisely as designed and gave him the marketing advantage over those nationals that he was looking for- all for less than the cost of a cup of coffee a day.

 

The moral of the story is a role reversal. If a national chain want to compete with the local merchant they need the local tools to do so.

BACKGROUND

 

In 2005 Martin Berns, CEO, started a company called MediaNet Group Technologies (MEDG) that built and marketed a product called BSP Rewards. It featured a web based cash back mall, and the company would brand it for companies and organization who wished to offer a “value added” benefit to their customers/employees. They would place their database of customers/employees into the program who would in turn shop through the mall and receive cash back with every purchase.   Their shoppers could earn, or buy, a plastic Discover Debit Card to load their earned rebates dollars.

 

Rebate Malls were in their infancy and the private branding aspect allowed MEDG to sell a variety of small to medium size companies. The Company subsequently went public (listed on OTCBB) and the successfully merged with one of their clients in 2009.

 

In 2010 management opened the present Company known as Shop WebTV (SWTV). Over the years, SWTV developed an expanded platform in the same industry. It licensed our unique cash back mall technology that allowed clients to customize the platform instantaneously with a back office provided for them. SWTV was, and still is, the only company in the world to offer this web based technology whereby clients can customize the platform with their own logos, colors, text graphics, videos, merchant choices and payment methods, etc.

 

As with all industries, the landscape began shifting and the market segment for web based malls was no exception. Although no other company offered “on the fly client customization”, they did have well-funded, large scale operations and marketing budgets and could advertise their mall directly to the public (such as ebates, Upromise) or build expensive malls for large clients such as banks and airlines. These high volume programs allowed them to offer higher rebates to which we could compete only marginally.

 

It was time to search for a niche that needed, and could utilize, this unique platform.

 

THE PRESENT

 

Approximately 18 months ago, the Company found the answer – the vast, and underserved, LOCAL MERCHANT Market. There are approximately 28 million local merchants and most of them are struggling to survive. The growing proliferation of Mass Merchants, Big Box Stores and technology has left the neighborhood merchant searching for answers as to how to compete. The Company developed that answer with its Local Thanks℠ platform (client customizable marketing tools and methodology). To reflect our expanded program the Company was renamed to Loyalty Superstore®.

 

Sure, customers visit neighborhood merchants but when they leave the store those merchant’s rarely captured the information enabling them to reach those people outside of their store.  They realize that if they could reach out and touch customers directly, they could bring them back more often and therefore enhance revenues plus continue to add new customers.

 

Local Merchants see what their large competitors utilize to bring their existing customers in more often and to attract new ones. Marketing tools like loyalty programs, free gifts, emails, texting, push messages, promotional website and mobile app – all the tools of modern marketing. Smaller merchants didn’t have either the budget or the time to implement a program such as that. Local Thanks℠ has the answer to both of those concerns.

 

This unique platform includes all of those mentioned marketing tools and even more such as our unique Screcial™ (scratch off specials technology) and Cross Marketing (that allows local merchant to leverage the customer database of other merchants in the neighborhood), Geo Location (that pinpoints customers in the area) and National Listing (that showcases local merchants to millions of potential customers) and National Rebate Mall. Local Thanks℠ is about to launch their strategic marketing partnership with Discover that could place their branded virtual Discover card in the hands of millions of consumers through  their customized branded Web Mall clients (already contracted) and Local Merchant programs.

 

Many companies have tried selling into the local merchant arena – and most have failed. The reason being, cost of sales and their offer of limited, single function or substandard programs. Individual boots on the street sales produced poor results at a very high cost. They found that local merchants are busy running all the aspects of their establishment while dealing with customers and their current product and service providers. Unknown and unannounced purveyors can’t get a foothold but Local Thanks℠ has found the answer.

 

Local Thanks℠ licenses their program to companies, organizations and ISOs (MSPs) that already have an established relationship with merchants. These licensees include merchant credit card processors, local deal companies, local newspapers, chambers of commerce, merchant associations, merchant services companies, etc.

 

These licensees will now be able to offer their already existing merchant customers the Local Thanks℠ marketing program as an added benefit to build business and enhance revenue for those merchants (for a cost of about a cup of coffee a day). Simultaneously, a commission program will generate a substantial passive, residual income for those licensees.

 

The licensee marketing platform, which is called MSP (Merchant Service Provider) is completed and the consumer platform is 95% completed. Both will be ready for launch in early July. Beta licensees have already been signed with initial MSPs who will begin offering. Local Thanks℠ to their merchant data bases commencing Mid-July with a national roll out to MSPs and local merchants to follow.

 

THE FUTURE

 

Local Thanks℠ plans to fully roll out its platform throughout the summer. The company has commenced a campaign to contact thousands of potential Licensees. The initial acceptance has been very positive as these companies and organizations have been looking for ways to solidify their local merchant customers and for ways of generating additional revenue for themselves.

 

The plan is to sign hundreds of licensees and then help them in turn to bring many of their 28 million potential merchants into the Local Thanks℠ program.
